Sponsor Your Parents and GrandParents
Canadian citizens and permanent residents can sponsor their parents and grandparents to Canada under the Family Sponsorship category.
You must submit an expression of interest to sponsor and if you are invited to apply, you can sponsor your parents or grandparents for permanent residence in Canada if you meet the following requirements;
- Be 18 years or older
- Reside in Canada
- Meet the Minimum Necessary Income (MNI) requirements.
- Provide financial support
- Agree to a sponsorship agreement (Undertaking) that outlines your commitment to provide necessities of your family members for a period of 20 years
Co-Signer
In general, your spouse or common-law partner can help you meet the income requirement to sponsor your parents and grandparents by co-signing the undertaking.
Irrespective of how long you’ve been married or in a common-law relationship
- Your spouse or common-law partner can be your co-signer
- Your co-signer must provide proof of income for the last 3 taxation years preceding the date of your application
As your co-signer, your spouse or common-law partner must:
- Meet the same eligibility requirement as you, the sponsor
- Agree to financially take care of and provide for the basic needs of the persons you are sponsoring for a period.
The sponsor and co-signer are equally liable if these obligations are not met.
How much income do I need to sponsor my parents and grandparents?

Because the COVID-19 pandemic may have harmed many sponsors financially, the income requirement for the 2020 and 2021 tax years has been reduced to the minimum necessary income, rather than the minimum necessary income plus 30%.
Application Process
The Parent and Grandparents Program involves two processes (PGP).
When the program opens for applications, Canadian citizens or permanent residents who want to sponsor their parents or grandparents for permanent residence in Canada must first register an Expression of Interest and receive an invitation to apply. Selected sponsors have a-60-day deadline to submit a complete application.
Every year, the government sends around 20,000 invitations to qualified sponsors to submit a full application.
