Work While You Study

From November 15, 2022 until December 31, 2023 International students can work off- campus more than 20 hours a week if they meet the prescribed requirements

If you are an international student seeking to supplement your income while studying in Canada, you do not need a work permit to begin working.

A study permit (student visa) allows you to work while studying as an international student without the need to apply for a work permit.

You can work while studying if your study program lasts more than six months and results in a degree, diploma, or certificate.

Work Off-Campus

In most instances, having a study permit and being a full-time student allows you to work off-campus for 20 hours per week during the academic season and full-time during scheduled breaks like summer or winter vacations. To Work Off-Campus

International students who are enrolled in full-time studies may be able to work on campus.

Working On-Campus means working for an employer on the campus of a university or college you’re enrolled in including the school, a faculty member, student organization, private business, a private contractor that provides services to the school and being self-employed.

The eligibility criteria for Working On-Campus is the same as Working Off-Campus.

Work Off-Campus

International students attending a Designated Learning Institution in Canada who are required to complete a mandatory work placement or internship must apply for a co-op or intern work permit in addition to a valid study permit.

If you work, whether paid or unpaid, to complete your program of study, you must obtain a co-op work permit.

To obtain a co-op work permit and begin the mandatory work experience, authorization from the educational institution is required.

Such work experience cannot exceed half of the study program.

Work experience considered essential to the program of study may include, field work, clinical work, practicums, volunteer work; or paid or unpaid internships.

The Co-op Work Permit may be used in addition to the standard work authorization granted to an international student, which indicates that an international student may work in a job unrelated to their program of study while also working in the required workplace.
